The Practice

Vajra Yoga

Vajra Yoga International Federation, founded by Anatoliy Pakhomov, is the only certified organization teaching therapeutic spinal care rooted in ancient Yoga principles.

Vajra Yoga is a holistic way of performing asanas (postures) aimed to preserve and improve spinal health.

The term "Vajra" (Tibetan: "Dorje") has several interpretations, including: diamond, lightning bolt, enlightenment, instant enlightenment, primordial state, the immovable state attained through Mahamudra practice. In Vajra Yoga, we understand Vajra to mean the primordial state, also called non-duality.

Foundation

Core Principles

Golden Rule

Shoulders parallel to hips. This fundamental alignment principle protects the spine and ensures safe, effective practice in every posture.

Stretch, Strengthen, Relax

The three essential phases of each practice. We stretch to create space, strengthen to build stability, and relax to integrate and restore.

Breath & Movement

Synchronize breath with movement; use Kumbhaka (breath hold) techniques. The breath guides each transition and deepens the practice.

Mahamudra

Being present here and now. Through mindful awareness, we cultivate the primordial state of non-dual presence in every moment.

Safe Practice

Spine-friendly Practice

No Twists

Twisting compresses the intervertebral foramina, which can impair nerve function and lead to internal organ dysfunction.

No Deep Side Bends

Deep side bends may trigger vertebral shifts that compress nerve roots and cause health issues. Pelvic tilting can also lead to persistent sacroiliac joint displacement.

No Deep Backbends

Deep backbends may cause vertebral misalignment, which can disrupt nerve supply to internal organs and also lead to herniated discs.

No Headstands

In headstands, the thoracic spine experiences increased load from the weight of the legs, pelvis, and large lumbar vertebrae.
